  • Crafting!

Yesterday I saw a double-pointed needle case at a knitting store.  It was beautiful and handmade, but out of my price range.  My plan was to put it on my wishlist, but when we got home, I decided to try to make one.  It's been really good tapping in to my love for creating things.

I'm really happy with the outcome.

Side note:  J and m were great while I was in my lab tinkering away.  Toward the end they even went for a walk so I could finish up!

  • To Meeps from her foolish parents...

Dear littlest one in the household,

I want to write a humble apology to you, which you can view later, upon learning to read.  You have two parents who love you to smithereens, but also make ridiculous decisions as they stumble along and learn on the job.  I want to apologize for a few things from this past 13 months.  Here goes!

    1.  We're sorry we didn't keep you warm enough when you were just a few weeks old.  You were a little under 5 lbs, and crying.  To solve this crying fiasco, we offered you everything - a diaper check, some milk, a pacifier, a nap...everything but a couple more layers of clothing.  Only when Auntie Lily made a comment on a posted photo of you and your dad - where he was wrapped in a down blanket sleeping on the ground next to you (wearing a diaper and a short sleeve shirt), did we realize our foolishness.  Now that you're older and probably much warmer, you probably think I over-dress you - three layers under your sweatshirt + socks and shoes.

    2.  We're sorry that we tried to take prints of your hands and feet when you were just a week old - using pink paint.  Between your screaming and the pink paint everywhere, we realized the folly of that one pretty quickly.  (By the way, it was my idea, not your dad's.)  Thanks to Auntie Jenn who brought over that clay imprint kit when you were two weeks old - it was way less traumatic.

    3.  We're sorry that in the beginning, we didn't give you a bath for over a week, and you smelled like cheese.  Thanks to Auntie Erica for being horrified.  After that you were carefully washed every other day until you started getting messy with the milk and made it every day!

That's what I can think of right now.  I'm sure there's more.  In writing this, my hope for you is that you will be able to humbly admit when you're wrong and that you'll know that we, your parents, don't always have all the right answers.  But we LOVE you so much, little one!  We're thankful that the Lord allows us to laugh about our mistakes and continue to learn.  Blessings to you!

    Love,
    Mama

  • Phew!

We went to the pediatric g.i. specialist and the nutritionist, and they both think that it's probably just that little m is not taking in enough calories!  For a worrier like me, that was a relief!

So we are now adding nonfat dry milk powder to her whole milk, and a tablespoon of olive oil into her beef stew.  We're working on getting her to drink more milk.  We've tried multiple sippy cups, regular cups, straws, spoons.  One time I even placed a Cheerio in every spoonful of milk - but she mastered getting the Cheerio with as little milk intake as possible.  Hmmmmm...

A few other suggestions we received from the doc:

    Bananas with whipped topping
    Croissants
    Eggs benedict with hollandaise sauce

As J recently said, "She eats better than we do!"  And...as of Monday, she's up to 14 lbs, 10.5 ounces!  WOO HOO!

  • Things I like about my life right now...

Just wanted to jot a few things I like about my life right now:

    1.  I wake up to m making noise (crying sometimes, but mostly chatting with her little pink bear) instead of to an alarm clock.  Alarm clocks never worked for me.  It was sweet relief when I got married - I just said, "J, you're in charge of getting me up."  Poor stressed out guy.  Apparently I sleep like a rock through alarm clock sounds.

    2.  I wear the same things all the time.  Jeans, long sleeve t-shirt, black sweatshirt (which I remember wearing to my bridal shower four years ago).  When I was working, I was told to "not dress like I did in college."  But hello!  There were no words on my t-shirts anymore!  I WAS dressing better than I did in college.

    3.  I have time to use the bathroom.  There were days when I was teaching when I just didn't feel like I could spare two minutes to go to the bathroom.  I felt like I was running on super-efficiency mode constantly - I would want to grade papers with any extra minute I had!  (This also probably meant I was majorly dehydrated all the time...) - maybe this one is TMI
